A <u>transnationalisation of politics</u> is another important aspect of globalisation besides the internationalisation of the state. The amount of political activity transcending the national societies or cutting across various societies is growing. Hundreds of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operate in the control of drug traffic, education, rural development, and protection of children, for example, and co-operate with the national states as well as inter-governmental organisations such as the UN. The organisations set up supranational networks which become ever more connected in the form of a <u>global civil society</u>. While only several hundred such transnational organisations existed in the early 20th century whose mutual connections were not always very firm, they amount to over 5,000 nowadays, forming a relatively strongly interconnected supranational structure.
