This was the day we travelled all the way from Eisenerz to Prague where we'd just learned that prohibition had been declared on hard alcohol following the deaths of 19 Czechs from alcohol spiked with methanol.
This was the day we travelled all the way from Eisenerz to Prague where we'd just learned that prohibition had been declared on hard alcohol following the deaths of 19 Czechs from alcohol spiked with methanol. Before we left, however, we all met in the hostel's seminar room where Andrew provided a short overview of mining issues and mining limits in the Usti region in the Czech Republic. This topic was presented to chime with a following presentation made by Herr Tiffner on the challenges of revitalising the town of Eisenerz after centuries of mining its 'iron mountain'. The town faces a number of issues, including depopulation, an ageing population, and housing capacity that far exceeds what the town needs. Eisenerz is therefore following a plan to move much its remaining population in the centre or sunny parts of the town and demolishing its superfluous housing stock. The town is also host to a number of popular events, including the Erzberg Rodeo and modern dance performance on its "iron mountain".

We made a short tour of the town and its new brewery before finally starting the long journey home.
