I know the deadline for feedback already elapsed, nevertheless accidentally I found a book which could be really helpful for you:

"The global food shortage: food scarcity on our planet and what we can do about it" by Lila Perl

It is quite old (I think something in the 1970), maybe it will help you to find some more aspects for your essay.. I have to say, that simply the fact, that even back then the food shortage problem was assumed to be a global problem.
