Marlene works as a research associate at the Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) Graz-Styria at the University of Graz, Austria. She graduated in Environmental System Sciences at the University of Graz with a special emphasis on research integration in sustainable urban development. Her main research focus is in the field of education for sustainable development, as well as regional learning and development. Marlene has participated in, coordinated and gained experience in a range of projects, such as the EU funded projects VCSE (Virtual Campus for a Sustainable Europe) and 3-LENSUS (Lifelong Learning Network for Sustainable Development), where she worked together with colleagues from Charles University in Prague. Her current projects include EduCamp (Education for Sustainable Development beyond the Campus, an EU TEMPUS project) where ESD teaching resource kits for school students in Egypt are being developed and where RCE Graz-Styria is responsible for the development of training for trainer programmes on ESD for professors from seven Egyptian universities. A further project, Sustainicum, funded by the Austrian Ministry of Science and Research, deals with fostering sustainable development in higher education teaching by developing innovative teaching modules and methods.

In cooperation with Andrew, Mario Diethart and Marlene organised and held the first Sustainability field trip to Austria in September 2012. Since 2012, Marlene has lived in Lüneburg, Germany. In June 2013 she organised another field trip to Lüneburg, together with colleagues from Leuphana University Lüneburg.
